Reader poll: what frugalfirstclass travellers want and why I asked

Hi Frugalistas!

Thanks so much to everyone who participated in the recent frugalfirstclasstravel reader survey.  So many of you took the time to tell me what you liked at frugalfirstclasstravel, and what you wanted to see more of.  As the Chief Frugalista I know what I like, but what did you like?  European destinations? Is there too much one bag packing?  Too many airline reviews?  Were you interested in non-European destinations?  And why did I ask anyway?  Well, all is now revealed…….

frugalfirstclasstravel readers love Europe

Yay, me too!  But sometimes I do go to other places – particularly with MissG and Mr frugalfirstclass.  I’m actually quite pleased you prefer to read about European destinations.  That’s my favourite too.  What it also does is allow me to have private time with my family and leave them (largely) out of my blog.

I’ll stick to great European destinations, both my old favorites and my new adventures, and continue to use my family trips for non-destination posts.  My post on keeping the weight off during a resort trip was inspired by a trip MissG and I took earlier this year.  If non-European destinations are your thing, I do post a lot of non-European destinations on my Instagram account.  I’d love to connect with you there.

frugalfirstclasstravel readers can’t get enough one bag packing posts

My packing posts always do very well online, and are among my post popular posts.  That means readers like them initially, but then they stay popular because lots of other readers find them via Google, Bing and other search engines.

Packing posts stay popular for a number of reasons I think.  Firstly, I think it’s the one thing women in particular struggle with.  Women want to pack light, but just don’t always know how.  Secondly, if you can do a basic one bag trip, how does that replicate into a genuine winter, or a fancy resort?  How do you make it work for children?  Lastly, I’d like to think readers like my packing posts because they can see I use my own clothes to illustrate what I’m saying, and I outline my thought processes.  I teach you how to think about packing, and how to use your own real life clothes – just like I do.  I love aspirational fashion and packing posts, but at the end of the day, everything you pack has to be your own.

frugalfirstclasstravel readers love a bit of airline porn and travel hacking

I know not everyone gets to travel at the pointy end of the plane.  I’m very spoilt in that regard.  But now I know you love to hear about airline reviews and travel hacks, I’ll be looking at doing more.  With my new camera, I can’t wait to get on that plane and get shooting away.  And you know I’ll always tell you what I think – I buy my own tickets so I don’t owe anyone any favours.

Now travel hacking.  I’ll continue to show you creative ways to get that flight, or find that freebie, regardless of how you like to travel, and your budget.

And finally, why I asked…….

Next week I’m heading to Athens after a break of more than 20years.  I’m excited about it for multiple reasons.  Partly because it’s so long since I’ve been.  Partly because I’ll be catching up with some great friends from all over the world.  But, I’m also attending TBEX, the great European travel blog event.  I’ll be taking in some great sightseeing and importantly, meeting new contacts for some exciting destinations in Europe.  What I hope this will mean is new destinations, new experiences, and hopefully some wonderful new blog posts to share.

Already planned for Athens – if you enjoyed my Istanbul walking tour, wait till you read about my Athens walking tour.  I’ll also be spending a day out of Athens, enjoying the Greek vineyards down in the Peloponnese.  A day on a Mediterranean cruise ship is still up in the air, but I’ve got my fingers crossed.  Plus everything you would expect to see on a trip to Athens, and of course, the special out of the way places that say “frugalfirstclasstravel”.

Thank you so much again for everybody who took the time to respond to the poll.  Even if you didn’t, thank you all for your support, feedback and encouragement.  I genuinely appreciate every single one of you.  Here’s to more one bag packing, more Europe, more flying, and more frugalfirstclasstravel!!

Have a wonderful time! It’s been a while but I’ve always loved travelling in Greece. In addition to Athens (used to stay with a friend who used to live there) I love the islands, especially Crete (where they still remember and venerate the Aussie soldiers who fought with the partisans during WWII -and hence they just tend to love Aussies generally), Hydra and Santorini. Even Aegina is a pleasant destination (and not so touristy) if you haven’t much time to travel far from Athens. Of course the spiritual side of Greece is important too: eg the monasteries around Meteora and for Ancient Greece: Delphi. Best wishes, Pamela

Thanks very much Pamela. I have been to both Meteora and Delphi in the past, but unfortunately no time this trip. If the weather is good I’m definitely hoping to get to Hydra though – I didn’t get there last time

Have a great time, I look forward to reading all about it on your posts. I was in Athens last year and loved it.
