The frugalfirstclasstravel top 10 posts of 2014

Hi Frugalistas!  Happy New Year and welcome to 2015.  Today I’m delighted to present to you my top 10 posts of 2014, based on my stats, and therefore as voted by you, my loyal readers.  Interestingly, many of my top 10 posts are older posts, and indeed some of them have proven more popular in 2014 than they were when I first wrote them.  As in previous years, airline reviews, and packing posts always feature strongly, but there were some surprises to be sure:

1.  Europe in the winter:  packing list for Europe

This post was the run away winner in 2014, despite being published in 2012.  It keeps getting more and more popular, and I’m delighted.

So many people think one bag packing for winter destinations is too hard, but this post proves it’s not the case at all!

2.  Cathay Pacific Premium Economy:  the frugalfirstclasstravel review

This was my number one post in 2013, and it has kept up its staying power in 2014.  As I said in 2013, I just wish I’d been able to be more positive about my experience…….

3.  Real life one bag travel:  my packing list for spring in Europe

Spring packing for Europe creates some unique packing dilemmas.  Like most destinations, spring weather is highly changeable, and when you add in vastly different climates from winter-like alpine areas, to summery Mediterranean beaches it can get tricky keeping to one carry on bag.  No wonder this post is so popular!

4.  Etihad Pearl Business Class:  the frugalfirstclasstravel review

This post from mid-2013 performed extremely well in 2014.  It gets a lot of consistent traffic via Google and other search engines, but picked up a lot of extra views when Etihad Airways posted my review update (that came in at number 8 overall) on their Facebook page.

5.  Ten tips for enjoying the Cinque Terre

This post just snuck into my top 10 in 2013, but has continued to perform well in 2014.  I also know of four regular readers who decided on a trip to the Cinque Terre during 2014 based on my enthusiasm for this gorgeous part of Italy.  Regardless of how many people who read this post, that is the most satisfying thing of all for me.

6.  Emirates A380 First Class:  the frugalfirstclasstravel review

We all love a bit of airline porn.  Regardless of whether we get to sit up in the pointy end of the plane, having a peek into what goes on behind the First Class curtain via a review is something we can all afford.  Of course, the Emirates A380 First Class has the added cache of “that” shower.  As well as performing well on search engines, avgeeks on Twitter and Reddit also flocked to this post in droves.

While you may never be able to have the privilege of sitting in First Class (and I certainly regard it as a privilege), we all love something a little aspirational…….

7.  Australia Post travel SIM:  the frugalfirstclasstravel review

If there was one post that surprised me this year, this is it.  I was given an Australia Post travel SIM card by a digital marketing company in return for a review.  I used the card, spent the (modest) credit they had loaded on it, wrote my post, then forgot about it…..

Little did I know……I thought this post would have very limited interest to the broader frugalfirstclasstravel readership.  It’s an Australian domestic product after all.  But boy, it keeps performing courtesy of its search engine ranking – and the fact there aren’t many reviews online.  A note that as bloggers we all need to remember – write about something not many other people have written about, and it will perform!

8.  Etihad Airways Pearl Business Class:   review update

This post was picked up by Etihad Airways and was posted on their Facebook page, much to my surprise and delight.  For a blogger, this is a bit like winning the lottery.  The blog went crazy, and many readers also read the related posts – including my initial, older review that came in at number 4.

9.  Real life one bag travel:  my packing list

My generic packing list was one of the first packing posts I wrote.  It keeps turning up, and again is in my top 10.  Why?  Because a good, generic packing list will work for anywhere, regardless of how or where you are travelling.  It’s still my “go to” list for my own travels.

10.  Garuda Airlines Business Class:  the frugalfirstclasstravel review

Another surprise for me rounds out my top 10 for 2014.  MissG and I went Garuda Business Class to Bali in 2012.  The post had limited interest – Garuda is very much a regional airline, rather than a big international carrier.  But it keeps on performing.  And the fact MissG and I enjoyed our experience makes it even better!

If you are a new reader to frugalfirstclasstravel, I hope you will enjoy “catching up” on some of these older posts – you can link to them by clicking on the headline.  To my loyal readers, thank you so much for your support and continued encouragement and feedback during 2014.  There’s lots of great things happening on the blog in 2015, and I look forward to sharing the journey with you.

Happy and safe travels to all in 2015!
